Hyphas refers to a group of organisms belonging to the kingdom Fungi. The term itself is a Latin plural, with the singular being hypha. Fungi are eukaryotic, heterotrophic organisms that reproduce via spores and typically have cell walls made of chitin. Hyphae are the fundamental structural units of most fungi.

These thread-like filaments are microscopic and extend from the fungal body, known as the mycelium. Hyphae are responsible for nutrient absorption, as they secrete digestive enzymes externally and then absorb the broken-down organic matter. This process allows fungi to decompose dead organisms, recycle nutrients, and in some cases, form symbiotic relationships with other living things, such as mycorrhizal associations with plant roots.

Hyphae can vary in form and function. Some are aseptate, meaning they lack cross-walls (septa) and are coenocytic, containing multiple nuclei within a continuous cytoplasm. Others are septate, possessing septa that divide the hyphae into individual cells. These septa can be complete or incomplete, with pores that allow for the passage of cytoplasm and organelles between cells. The growth of hyphae is apical, meaning they lengthen at their tips. This growth pattern enables fungi to efficiently explore and colonize their environment in search of food sources.
