Hyperreflexic refers to a state of exaggerated reflexes, particularly the stretch reflex. This means that when a muscle is stretched, it contracts more forcefully than usual. This overactivity of the reflex arc is often a sign of an upper motor neuron lesion, which is damage to the nerve pathways that control voluntary muscle movement and that originate in the brain and descend to the spinal cord.

The most common cause of hyperreflexia is damage to the brain or spinal cord. This damage can result from various conditions, including stroke, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and certain genetic disorders. In these conditions, the normal inhibitory signals from the brain to the spinal cord are disrupted, leading to an overactive reflex response.

Diagnosis of hyperreflexia typically involves a neurological examination where a physician tests the patient's reflexes using a reflex hammer. Signs of hyperreflexia include clonus, which is a series of involuntary, rhythmic muscle contractions, and spasticity, a type of muscle stiffness. Treatment focuses on addressing the underlying cause of the neurological damage. Medications may be used to manage the symptoms of hyperreflexia, such as muscle relaxants to reduce spasticity and improve comfort and mobility. Rehabilitation therapies, including physical and occupational therapy, are also crucial for managing the effects of hyperreflexia and improving functional abilities.
