The term hipocenter, also known as the hypocenter or focus, refers to the point within the Earth where an earthquake or underground explosion originates. It is the actual location where the rock fractures and seismic waves are generated. This point is typically located beneath the Earth's surface. The depth of the hipocenter is a critical factor in determining the potential damage caused by an earthquake. Shallower hipocenters generally result in more intense shaking at the surface because the seismic waves have less distance to travel and attenuate. Conversely, deeper hipocenters produce less surface shaking. Scientists determine the location of the hipocenter by analyzing seismic data recorded by seismographs at various locations. The differences in arrival times of seismic waves at different stations allow for triangulation, pinpointing the origin. While the hipocenter is the precise point of rupture, the epicenter is the point on the Earth's surface directly above the hipocenter.
