Hiilivetyfluoridien, also known as hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), are a group of organic compounds containing carbon, hydrogen, and fluorine atoms. They are synthetic chemicals that were developed as replacements for ozone-depleting substances such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs). HFCs are commonly used as refrigerants in air conditioning and refrigeration systems, as blowing agents for foams, and as propellants in aerosol sprays.

The primary benefit of HFCs over their predecessors is that they do not deplete the stratospheric ozone layer. However, HFCs are potent greenhouse gases, meaning they contribute significantly to global warming. Their global warming potentials (GWPs) are much higher than that of carbon dioxide. Due to these environmental concerns, there is a global effort, such as the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, to phase down the production and consumption of HFCs and transition to more climate-friendly alternatives. These alternatives include hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs) and natural refrigerants like ammonia and carbon dioxide, which have lower or negligible GWPs. The transition away from HFCs aims to mitigate their impact on climate change.
