Heterotsükliline refers to a chemical compound that contains a ring structure in which at least one of the atoms in the ring is an element other than carbon. These rings are called heterocyclic rings. The most common heteroatoms found in these rings are nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur, but other elements like phosphorus and selenium can also be present. Heterocyclic compounds are incredibly diverse and form a vast and important class of organic molecules.

The properties of heterocyclic compounds are greatly influenced by the type and position of the heteroatom within the ring, as well as the size and degree of unsaturation of the ring.
