Hengerlés is a metal forming process used to reduce the thickness or increase the length of a metal workpiece through compressive forces. It involves passing the metal between two or more rotating rollers. The gap between the rollers determines the final thickness of the material. As the metal passes through the rollers, it is plastically deformed and elongated.

There are two main types of rolling: hot rolling and cold rolling. Hot rolling is performed at temperatures above the metal's recrystallization temperature. This allows for greater deformation with less force and results in a more ductile product. However, hot-rolled products may have a less precise surface finish and dimensional accuracy due to scaling and oxidation. Cold rolling is performed at temperatures below the metal's recrystallization temperature, typically at room temperature. This process results in a smoother surface finish, tighter dimensional tolerances, and increased strength and hardness due to work hardening. Cold-rolled products, however, require more force and can be less ductile.
