A hemiacetal is a functional group in organic chemistry that contains one ether linkage and one alcohol group attached to the same carbon atom. It is formed by the reaction of an aldehyde or a ketone with an alcohol in the presence of an acid catalyst. The reaction is reversible, meaning that hemiacetals can also revert back to their starting materials under acidic conditions.

In the formation of a hemiacetal from an aldehyde, the oxygen atom of the carbonyl group is protonated by the acid catalyst. This makes the carbonyl carbon more electrophilic and susceptible to nucleophilic attack by the alcohol. The alcohol then adds to the carbonyl carbon, forming a tetrahedral intermediate. This intermediate then loses a proton, yielding the hemiacetal. The reaction with a ketone follows a similar pathway, but the resulting hemiacetal is called a hemiketal.

Hemiacetals are important intermediates in many chemical reactions, including the formation of acetals and the cyclization of carbohydrates. Carbohydrates that exist in cyclic forms, such as glucose and fructose, often exist as hemiacetals. In these cases, the alcohol group is part of the same molecule as the aldehyde or ketone group, leading to intramolecular hemiacetal formation. This cyclization plays a crucial role in the structure and properties of sugars.
