Hematopoiesis is the process by which all blood cells and platelets are formed. In adults, this process mainly occurs in the bone marrow, a spongy tissue found within bones. Hematopoiesis begins with hematopoietic stem cells, which are multipotent stem cells that can differentiate into all types of blood cells, including white blood cells (leukocytes), red blood cells (erythrocytes), and platelets (thrombocytes).

The development of these cells involves a series of complex differentiation and maturation steps. For example, red blood cells are responsible for oxygen transport, while white blood cells are crucial components of the immune system. Platelets play a vital role in blood clotting to prevent excessive bleeding. The production of each type of blood cell is tightly regulated by various growth factors and cytokines, ensuring a continuous supply to meet the body's needs.

In fetal development, hematopoiesis initially takes place in the yolk sac, then moves to the fetal liver and spleen, before finally settling in the bone marrow by the third trimester of pregnancy. After birth, the bone marrow becomes the primary site of hematopoiesis throughout life. Disorders of hematopoiesis can lead to various blood diseases, such as anemia, leukemia, and thrombocytopenia. Medical interventions like bone marrow transplantation aim to restore normal blood cell production in individuals with severe hematopoiesis defects.
