Hematopoiesis is the process by which all blood cells and platelets are formed. This continuous, complex process originates from hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), which are multipotent stem cells found in the bone marrow. These HSCs have the unique ability to differentiate into all the various types of blood cells, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.

The development of these different cell lineages is carefully regulated by a network of growth factors, cytokines, and signaling molecules. For instance, erythropoietin is a key hormone that stimulates the production of red blood cells, while colony-stimulating factors promote the growth and differentiation of white blood cells. Platelets, essential for blood clotting, develop from megakaryocytes.

Hematopoiesis is crucial for maintaining health. Red blood cells carry oxygen throughout the body, white blood cells are vital components of the immune system fighting infection, and platelets prevent excessive bleeding. Disorders of hematopoiesis can lead to various diseases, such as anemia, leukemia, and bleeding disorders, highlighting the critical importance of this finely tuned biological process. The bone marrow is the primary site of hematopoiesis in adults, although it occurs in the liver and spleen during fetal development.
