Helivõimsus, often translated as sound power, is a physical quantity that measures the total acoustic energy radiated by a sound source per unit of time. Sound power is distinct from sound pressure, which is the variation in atmospheric pressure caused by a sound wave and is what we perceive as loudness. While sound pressure is measured at a specific point in space, sound power represents the total energy output of the source. Imagine a light bulb; its light power is the total light it emits, regardless of how far away you are. Sound power is analogous to this.

Measuring sound power often involves complex procedures, such as using an anechoic chamber to eliminate reflections or employing sound intensity probes to integrate the sound energy flow over a surface enclosing the source. Understanding sound power is crucial in fields like acoustics engineering for noise control, product design, and environmental impact assessments.
