Helium3rich is a term used to describe celestial bodies or locations that possess a significantly higher concentration of the helium isotope helium-3 (³He) compared to typical terrestrial abundances. Helium-3 is a rare isotope of helium, distinct from the more common helium-4 (⁴He). On Earth, helium-3 is primarily produced by the radioactive decay of tritium, which itself is produced in nuclear reactors or through cosmic ray interactions.

The most notable source of helium-3 in our solar system is believed to be the lunar regolith, the layer of loose dust and rock that covers the Moon's surface. During the Sun's early history, the Sun emitted a large amount of helium-3, which was then implanted into the lunar surface by the solar wind over billions of years. This process is thought to have resulted in concentrations of helium-3 on the Moon that are orders of magnitude greater than those found on Earth. Other bodies in the solar system, such as gas giants like Jupiter and Saturn, are also thought to contain substantial amounts of helium-3 within their atmospheres, though accessing it would present considerable engineering challenges.

The interest in helium-3 rich environments, particularly the Moon, stems from its potential as a fuel source for nuclear fusion reactors. Helium-3 fusion, specifically the ³He-³He reaction, is considered a potentially cleaner and safer form of fusion energy compared to deuterium-tritium fusion, as it produces fewer high-energy neutrons. However, achieving sustained helium-3 fusion requires extremely high temperatures and is currently beyond our technological capabilities. Despite these challenges, the prospect of lunar helium-3 mining remains a topic of discussion in space exploration and future energy research.
