Hegységépítés, also known as mountain building or orogeny, refers to the geological processes that result in the formation of mountain ranges. These processes are primarily driven by plate tectonics, the theory that the Earth's lithosphere is divided into a number of large plates that move slowly over the underlying asthenosphere.

The most common mechanism for mountain building is the collision of tectonic plates. When two continental plates converge, neither can subduct beneath the other due to their similar densities. Instead, the crust is compressed, folded, and faulted, leading to significant crustal thickening and the uplift of landmasses, forming fold mountains. The Himalayas, formed by the collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates, are a prime example.

Another type of mountain building occurs at convergent plate boundaries where an oceanic plate subducts beneath a continental plate. The oceanic plate descends into the mantle, melting and generating magma that rises to the surface, forming volcanic mountain ranges. The Andes Mountains in South America are a result of this process. Fault-block mountains can also form through tensional forces, where the Earth's crust is pulled apart, causing large blocks of rock to be uplifted or tilted along faults. The Basin and Range Province in the western United States showcases this type of mountain formation. Erosion and weathering also play a significant role in shaping mountains over geological time, carving out valleys and peaks from the initial uplifted mass.
