The journey of sperm begins with ejaculation, where millions of sperm are deposited into the female reproductive tract. Sperm possess a tail that enables them to swim, and they are guided by chemical signals released by the ovum.

When a sperm encounters an ovum, it must overcome several barriers. The acrosome, a cap-like structure on the head of the sperm, contains enzymes that help to break down the ovum's protective layers. Once a sperm successfully penetrates the ovum's membrane, the genetic material from the sperm fuses with the genetic material of the ovum. This fusion restores the diploid number of chromosomes and initiates the development of a new organism. The resulting zygote then begins to divide and differentiate, a process that will eventually lead to the formation of an embryo.
