Havsedimenter, meaning sea sediments, refers to the layers of solid material that accumulate on the ocean floor. These sediments are derived from various sources, including the weathering and erosion of continental rocks, volcanic activity, biological processes, and even extraterrestrial dust. They play a crucial role in Earth's geological and biogeochemical cycles.

The composition of sea sediments varies greatly depending on the location. Near continents, terrigenous sediments, originating from land, are abundant. These are typically composed of sand, silt, and clay particles. In areas further from land, biogenic sediments dominate, formed from the skeletal remains of marine organisms such as plankton, corals, and shellfish. These include calcareous oozes (made of calcium carbonate) and siliceous oozes (made of silica).

Hydrothermal vents on the ocean floor can also release minerals, forming authigenic sediments rich in metallic elements. Additionally, cosmic dust constantly rains down on the Earth, contributing a small but persistent component to marine sediments.

The study of sea sediments, known as paleoceanography, provides valuable insights into past ocean conditions, climate change, and geological events. The layers within sediment cores act as a historical record, preserving information about sea level, temperature, ocean currents, and the evolution of marine life over millions of years.
