Hangnemet is the Hungarian term for the musical key, the tonal framework that centers a piece around a specific pitch and scale. It identifies the tonic, or home note, and the scale built on it, most commonly treated as either major or minor in Western classical practice. The choice of hangnemet influences melodic direction, harmonic relationships, and the overall mood of a work.

Notation and relationships play a central role in hangnemet. A key signature, consisting of sharps or flats at the beginning of a staff, indicates which notes are consistently altered in the piece. Major and minor keys can share the same key signature, known as relative keys, such as C major and A minor. Parallel keys differ by quality but share the same tonic (for example, C major and C minor).
