Haloarenite is a sedimentary rock type. It is primarily composed of halite, also known as rock salt. This rock forms through the evaporation of saline water bodies, such as inland seas or lakes, in arid or semi-arid environments. The process of halite precipitation occurs when the concentration of dissolved salts in the water exceeds saturation. Over time, layers of halite accumulate and are subsequently buried and lithified.

The term "arenite" refers to a sandstone where the grains are predominantly sand-sized (0.0625 to 2 millimeters) and are well-sorted. Therefore, a haloarenite is essentially a sandstone where the clasts are primarily halite grains of this size. While halite is the dominant component, haloarenites can sometimes contain minor amounts of other minerals, such as anhydrite, gypsum, or clay, which were co-precipitated or incorporated during deposition. The texture of haloarenite can vary, but it often exhibits a crystalline structure due to the nature of halite. These rocks are often found in evaporite sequences, which are geological formations characterized by layers of salts and other minerals deposited from evaporating water.
