Hallintareiluneet refers to the administrative divisions of Finland. The country is historically divided into provinces, or maakunnat, which are primarily cultural and historical entities. However, for administrative purposes, Finland is currently organized into regions, or maakunnat, which are governed by regional councils. These regions replaced the former provinces in 2010. The primary functions of these regional councils include land use planning, economic development, and public health services. Each region is further divided into municipalities, or kuntat, which are the basic units of local government.
