Hakkuriteholähteillä, known in English as switched-mode power supplies (SMPS), are a type of electronic power supply that uses a switching regulator to convert electrical power more efficiently. Unlike linear power supplies, which dissipate excess voltage as heat, SMPS rapidly switch a power-switching element like a transistor on and off. This switching action, typically at frequencies ranging from tens of kilohertz to several megahertz, allows for smaller and lighter components, as well as significantly improved efficiency.

The core principle of a hakkuriteholähde involves converting the input AC voltage to DC, then chopping this DC into a high-frequency waveform. This waveform is then transformed to the desired output voltage using a high-frequency transformer. Finally, the output is rectified and filtered to produce a stable DC output. This high-frequency operation is key to their compact size and efficiency, as the transformers and capacitors can be much smaller for a given power handling capacity compared to their mains-frequency counterparts.
