Haihdutusjäähdytystä, known in English as evaporative cooling, is a process that cools air through the evaporation of water. As water evaporates, it absorbs heat from the surrounding air, thus lowering the air's temperature. This natural phenomenon is the basis for various cooling technologies.

The effectiveness of evaporative cooling is directly related to the humidity of the air. It works best in dry climates where the air can readily absorb more moisture. In humid environments, the evaporation rate is slower, and the cooling effect is diminished, making it less suitable as a primary cooling method.

Common applications of evaporative cooling include swamp coolers, also known as desert coolers, which are widely used in arid regions. These devices draw warm outside air through water-soaked pads. As the water evaporates, it cools the air, which is then circulated into a building. Industrial processes also utilize evaporative cooling for tasks such as cooling machinery or in cooling towers for power plants. Personal cooling devices, like handheld fans that spray mist, also employ this principle on a smaller scale. While evaporative cooling is an energy-efficient alternative to traditional air conditioning, its performance is contingent on environmental conditions.
