Höyläkoneet, commonly known as planers in English, are woodworking machines used to flatten and reduce the thickness of a rough piece of lumber. They operate by using a rotating cutter head equipped with blades that shave off thin layers of wood. This process results in a smooth and dimensionally accurate surface.

There are several types of höyläkoneet, with the two most common being benchtop planers and freestanding planers. Benchtop planers are compact and designed for smaller workshops or for portability. They typically handle smaller workpieces and offer less power than their larger counterparts. Another important distinction is between single-sided and double-sided planers. Single-sided planers, the most common type, flatten one surface of the workpiece at a time. Double-sided planers, also called combination planers or straight-line rip and crosscut planers, can plane both the top and bottom surfaces simultaneously, significantly increasing efficiency for large production runs.
