Hårcellregeneration refers to the biological process by which damaged or lost hair cells are replaced. Hair cells, also known as sensory hair cells, are specialized mechanosensory cells found in the auditory and vestibular systems of the inner ear. They are crucial for hearing and balance. In mammals, unlike in many other vertebrates like birds and reptiles, there is a very limited capacity for hair cell regeneration.

Damage to hair cells can occur due to factors such as exposure to loud noise, ototoxic drugs, aging, and genetic predispositions. Once damaged or destroyed, mammalian hair cells do not readily regenerate, leading to permanent hearing loss or balance disorders. While natural hair cell regeneration in mammals is minimal, ongoing research holds promise for developing therapeutic strategies to restore hearing and balance by inducing or enhancing this regenerative process. Success in this area could revolutionize the treatment of hearing and vestibular disorders.
