The term *gyökérmerisztéma* refers to the root apical meristem, a crucial region of plant growth located at the tip of roots. This meristematic tissue is responsible for the primary growth of roots, enabling them to elongate and penetrate deeper into the soil. The root apical meristem consists of several distinct zones, including the root cap, the zone of cell division, the zone of elongation, and the zone of maturation.

The root cap, positioned at the very tip, protects the delicate meristematic cells from mechanical damage as the root pushes through the soil. Beneath the root cap lies the zone of cell division, where actively dividing cells produce new root tissue. These cells are derived from the apical meristem and undergo rapid mitosis, contributing to the root’s extension.

Following the zone of cell division is the zone of elongation, where newly formed cells increase in length, pushing the root further into the substrate.
