Goiter refers to an abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland, a butterfly-shaped gland located in the front of the neck below the Adam's apple. This enlargement, known as a goiter, can cause a visible swelling in the neck and may sometimes lead to difficulty swallowing or breathing. Goiters can be diffuse, affecting the entire thyroid gland, or nodular, characterized by the development of one or more lumps within the gland.

Several factors can cause a goiter. Iodine deficiency is a common cause worldwide, as iodine is essential for the production of thyroid hormones. Autoimmune conditions like Hashimoto's thyroiditis or Graves' disease, where the immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland, can also lead to goiter. Other causes include thyroid nodules, thyroiditis (inflammation of the thyroid), and in rarer cases, thyroid cancer.

The symptoms of a goiter vary depending on its size and the underlying cause. Many goiters are asymptomatic and are discovered incidentally during a physical examination. When symptoms do occur, they can include a visible swelling in the neck, a sensation of tightness in the throat, difficulty swallowing or breathing, hoarseness, and sometimes symptoms related to overactive (hyperthyroidism) or underactive (hypothyroidism) thyroid function, depending on the specific condition causing the goiter. Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, blood tests to assess thyroid hormone levels and antibodies, and often imaging studies such as an ultrasound. Treatment depends on the cause and size of the goiter, and may involve thyroid hormone replacement, medication to manage thyroid function, or surgery to remove part or all of the enlarged gland.
