Glykosidaariset refers to compounds known as glycosides. A glycoside is a molecule in which a sugar molecule (a monosaccharide) is bound to another functional group via a glycosidic bond. This other functional group is referred to as the aglycone or genin. The glycosidic bond is formed when the anomeric hydroxyl group of a sugar reacts with a hydroxyl, thiol, or amino group of the aglycone. This process typically involves the loss of a water molecule and is catalyzed by enzymes called glycosyltransferases or by acids.

Glycosides are widespread in nature, particularly in plants, but are also found in animals, fungi, and bacteria. They play a variety of roles in biological systems. In plants, they can serve as storage forms of sugars, aid in transport, act as pigments, or provide defense mechanisms against herbivores or pathogens. Many natural products with medicinal properties are glycosides, such as cardiac glycosides (like digoxin) which affect heart function, or saponins which can have detergent-like properties.

The hydrolysis of a glycosidic bond, which breaks the molecule back into its constituent sugar and aglycone, can be achieved using acids or specific enzymes called glycosidases. This cleavage is often a crucial step in the biological activity or metabolism of a glycoside. The classification of glycosides is based on the type of sugar involved (e.g., O-glycosides if the aglycone is linked via an oxygen atom, N-glycosides via a nitrogen atom) and the structure of the aglycone.
