Glycoideina is a rare and ill-defined antibiotic compound found in certain species of Streptomyces bacteria. It was first isolated from the bacterium Streptomyces chrysomallus in the 1940s.

Glycoideina exhibits a broad spectrum of antibacterial activity, including against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. However, its mechanism of action is not well understood and appears to be distinct from other antibiotics. It has been reported to inhibit the synthesis of bacterial cell wall components, specifically the formation of peptidoglycan.

Several studies have investigated the potential of glycoideina as a therapeutic agent, but its toxicity and pharmacokinetics remain a concern. Some studies have reported adverse effects, including hepatotoxicity and gastrointestinal side effects. As a result, further research was necessary to determine its safety and efficacy.

Efforts were made to isolate and purify glycoideina, with some investigators attempting to produce it through fermentation or chemical synthesis. However, the yields obtained were typically low, and the compound proved difficult to purify. Due to these challenges and the compound's toxicity profile, development of glycoideina as a therapeutic agent was ultimately not pursued.
