Glikozidkötések refer to the type of covalent bond that links a carbohydrate molecule to another functional group. This functional group can be another carbohydrate molecule, forming a disaccharide, oligosaccharide, or polysaccharide. It can also be a non-carbohydrate molecule, such as an alcohol, phenol, thiol, or amine, forming a glycoside. The formation of a glycosidic bond typically involves a dehydration reaction, where a molecule of water is removed.

The anomeric carbon of the carbohydrate is the key atom involved in forming the glycosidic bond. This carbon is usually part of the hemiacetal or hemiketal group of the sugar. The oxygen atom of the hydroxyl group on the anomeric carbon is replaced by a linkage to the other molecule. The type of glycosidic bond is often described by the configuration of the anomeric carbon (alpha or beta) and the carbon atom of the other molecule that is involved in the linkage (e.g., 1->4 linkage in maltose).

Glycosidic bonds are fundamental to the structure and function of many biological molecules. They are responsible for the formation of complex carbohydrates like starch, glycogen, and cellulose, which serve as energy storage and structural components in living organisms. In addition, glycosidic bonds are found in important biomolecules such as nucleosides (linking a sugar to a nitrogenous base), glycoproteins (linking carbohydrates to proteins), and glycolipids (linking carbohydrates to lipids). The breakdown of glycosidic bonds, often through hydrolysis catalyzed by enzymes called glycosidases, releases the constituent monosaccharides and is crucial for energy metabolism and other cellular processes.
