GESTIS is a hazard information system for hazardous substances, managed by the German Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA). It provides standardized information on chemical substances used in workplaces, supporting risk assessment, product stewardship, labeling, and regulatory compliance.

The core resource is the GESTIS Substance Database, which contains entries for thousands of substances with structured data. Each entry typically includes physical and chemical properties, hazard classifications and labeling according to the Global Harmonized System (GHS), toxicological and ecotoxicological information, safe handling and storage recommendations, first-aid measures, and guidance on personal protective equipment. It also includes regulatory information such as occupational exposure limit values (OELs) from German TRGS and international sources, as well as transport classifications and emergency response data.

The database is publicly accessible online and is used by safety professionals, employers, researchers, and educators to support risk assessment and compliance with national and EU safety regulations. It is periodically updated to reflect new toxicological data, changes in regulatory classifications, and revised exposure limits.
