Germánske is a term used to describe the Germanic branch of the Indo-European language family. In Slovak linguistic usage, germánske denotes anything related to the Germanic languages, their peoples, and their historical culture. The Germanic languages form a primary subgroup within Indo-European and are traditionally divided into three branches: West Germanic, North Germanic, and East Germanic. The East Germanic branch is extinct, with Gothic being the best documented language. West Germanic includes German, English, Dutch (and Afrikaans), while North Germanic comprises the Scandinavian languages such as Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Icelandic, and Faroese.

Proto-Germanic is the reconstructed ancestor of these languages, believed to have developed in the Nordic and North Sea region in the late Bronze Age and early Iron Age. It is characterized by historic sound changes associated with Germanic development, such as Grimm’s law and Verner’s law. The Germanic peoples spread across Europe during the Roman era and the Migration Period, leading to the diversification of dialects and the emergence of separate language communities in what is now Germany, the British Isles, the Netherlands, Scandinavia, and beyond.

Today germánske languages are spoken across Europe and in many parts of the world due to historical migration and colonization. They include some of the most widely used languages globally, notably English and German. The term also appears in linguistic literature to compare phonology, morphology, and syntactic features that unite these languages, while recognizing substantial regional variation.
