It refers to a principle of heat transfer where two fluids at different temperatures flow in opposite directions. This arrangement maximizes the efficiency of heat transfer between the two fluids.

In a countercurrent heat exchanger, the hotter fluid flows in one direction, while the cooler fluid flows in the opposite direction, parallel to the hotter fluid. As the fluids move past each other, heat is transferred from the hotter fluid to the cooler fluid. The key advantage of this arrangement is that it maintains a more consistent temperature difference along the entire length of the exchanger. This allows for more complete heat transfer compared to parallel flow, where the temperature difference decreases significantly along the exchanger.
