A gauge boson is a fundamental particle that mediates one of the four fundamental forces of nature. These forces are gravity, electromagnetism, the strong nuclear force, and the weak nuclear force. Gauge bosons are so named because their existence and properties are dictated by the principles of gauge symmetry in quantum field theory. These symmetries are a fundamental concept in modern physics, describing the underlying structure of interactions between particles.

For each fundamental force, there is a corresponding type of gauge boson. The photon is the gauge boson of the electromagnetic force, mediating interactions between electrically charged particles. The gluons are the gauge bosons of the strong nuclear force, responsible for binding quarks together to form protons and neutrons, and holding protons and neutrons together within atomic nuclei. The W and Z bosons are the gauge bosons of the weak nuclear force, which is involved in radioactive decay processes. Gravity, while thought to be mediated by a gauge boson called the graviton, has not yet been experimentally confirmed in the same way as the other gauge bosons. Gauge bosons are typically massless, with the exception of the W and Z bosons, which are very massive. This mass difference significantly impacts the range over which the weak force operates compared to the electromagnetic and strong forces.
