Gaskomponents are the individual chemical species that constitute a gaseous mixture. In practice, any gas can be treated as a single pure component or as a combination of several components, each with a defined concentration that influences the mixture's physical and chemical behavior.

Each component is described by quantities such as mole fraction, mass fraction, and partial pressure. Under the ideal gas law, the partial pressure of a component equals its mole fraction times the total pressure (P_i = x_i P). Real gases may require corrections via fugacity coefficients.

Determination and modeling: Composition is measured with instruments such as gas chromatography, mass spectrometry, or infrared spectroscopy. For design and simulation, mixtures are described with equations of state and transport models; diffusion can be treated with Fick's law or Maxwell-Stefan formulations, depending on accuracy and conditions.

Applications: The concept is central to atmospheric science, combustion, environmental monitoring, and chemical engineering. Examples include air, which consists mainly of nitrogen and oxygen with small amounts of argon, carbon dioxide, and other trace gases, and natural gas, dominated by methane with heavier hydrocarbons and CO2.
