In ferns and other vascular plants, the gametophyte is significantly reduced in size and often inconspicuous. It is usually a small, heart-shaped structure called a prothallus in ferns. The sporophyte generation, the familiar leafy plant, is dominant. The gametophyte, despite its small size, is crucial as it houses the reproductive organs where fertilization occurs, leading to the development of the diploid sporophyte.

The alternation of generations, with a haploid gametophyte phase and a diploid sporophyte phase, is a fundamental concept in plant biology. The transition from gametophyte to sporophyte involves the fusion of gametes (fertilization) to form a zygote, which then develops into the sporophyte. The sporophyte, in turn, produces spores through meiosis, which germinate to form new gametophytes, completing the cycle.
