Førerkortkategorier divide the various types of vehicle driving permits that are issued by different countries to individuals who are qualified to operate them. The permits differ in the weight or type of vehicle that can be driven.

In most countries the effekttante system is used where there are 1-5 categories of driving permit. Category 1 is a permit that allows drivers to drive small vehicles with low engine power. Category 2 permits may also allow drivers to drive larger vehicles with higher engine power. Category 3 permits typically allow drivers to operate more heavy-duty vehicles, but category 4 and 5 may enable drivers to operate vehicles with even greater weight or with specific heavy vehicle trailers.

Typically a country's ministry of transportation or a similar government agency is responsible for issuing driving permits. To get a driving permit an individual must first meet the necessary requirements such as being at least 18 years of age, passing a written test and a practical test that assesses the individual's ability to operate a vehicle of the designated category safely.

Once the necessary requirements have been met the individual will usually be issued a permit. This permit will detail which categories the individual is permitted to drive, along with their name, date of birth and a photo. The individual may also be required to renew their permit periodically in order to remain eligible to drive vehicles within designated categories. The process for obtaining and renewing driving permits varies between countries.
