If the source is moving towards the observer, the frequency appears higher (a blueshift for light, a higher pitch for sound). Conversely, if the source is moving away, the frequency appears lower (a redshift for light, a lower pitch for sound).

In acoustics, frequency is directly related to pitch. Thus, a frequency change in a sound wave results in a change in the perceived pitch. For instance, the siren of an ambulance sounds higher as it approaches and lower as it moves away, illustrating the Doppler effect in sound.

In electromagnetism, frequency is related to the color of light and the energy of photons. Astronomy extensively uses redshift and blueshift, which are specific types of frequency changes in light, to study the motion of celestial objects and the expansion of the universe. Redshift indicates that a star or galaxy is moving away from Earth, while blueshift indicates it is moving towards us. Radio communication also relies on maintaining specific frequencies, and unwanted frequency changes can lead to signal degradation or loss of communication. Understanding and managing frequency changes are crucial in many scientific and technological applications.
