Frekvenciamodulált, often abbreviated as FM, refers to a method of encoding information onto a carrier wave by varying its frequency. In frequency modulation, the amplitude of the carrier wave remains constant, while its instantaneous frequency is altered in proportion to the instantaneous amplitude of the modulating signal. This means that a higher amplitude in the original signal results in a greater deviation of the carrier frequency from its resting frequency, and a lower amplitude results in a smaller deviation.

FM is widely used in radio broadcasting, particularly for high-fidelity audio transmission, as it is less susceptible to static and interference compared to amplitude modulation (AM). The wider bandwidth required for FM signals contributes to their improved sound quality. When FM is used in radio, the original audio signal, which is typically a complex waveform, is used to modulate the frequency of a radio wave. The receiver then demodulates this signal, extracting the original audio information by measuring the frequency variations of the incoming wave.

Beyond radio, frequency modulation finds applications in various other fields, including telemetry, where data is transmitted over long distances, and in some types of wireless communication systems. The principle of FM relies on the fact that changes in frequency can be reliably detected and converted back into the original signal without significant distortion, making it a robust modulation technique for many communication needs.
