Fovoltaal is a term that refers to photovoltaic technology. Photovoltaic, often abbreviated as PV, describes the process of converting light energy directly into electrical energy using semiconductor materials. This conversion is achieved through the photovoltaic effect, a phenomenon where light striking a material excites electrons, causing them to flow and generate an electric current.

The most common application of photovoltaic technology is in solar panels, also known as solar modules. These panels are made up of many individual solar cells. When sunlight hits these cells, the photons in the light impart energy to electrons in the semiconductor material, typically silicon. This energy allows the electrons to break free from their atoms and move, creating a direct current (DC) electricity. This DC electricity can then be used directly, stored in batteries, or converted into alternating current (AC) electricity using an inverter for use in homes and businesses or to feed into the electrical grid.

Photovoltaic technology has become increasingly important in renewable energy generation. Its widespread adoption is driven by decreasing costs, technological advancements, and a global focus on reducing reliance on fossil fuels. PV systems are scalable, ranging from small rooftop installations to large-scale solar farms. The environmental benefits are significant, as PV systems produce electricity without emitting greenhouse gases or other pollutants during operation.
