Foniatria is a medical specialty that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of voice, speech, language, and swallowing disorders. It is concerned with the functional aspects of the organs involved in these processes, including the larynx, pharynx, oral cavity, and the neurological pathways that control them. Phoniatrics often deals with conditions affecting both children and adults.

Common conditions treated by phoniatrists include voice disorders such as hoarseness, aphonia (loss of voice), and vocal nodules, which can arise from overuse, misuse, or medical conditions. Speech disorders, such as stuttering (dysphemia), articulation disorders, and dysarthria (difficulty in speaking due to muscle weakness), are also within the scope of phoniatrics. Language disorders, including developmental language delays, aphasia (loss of ability to understand or produce speech due to brain damage), and dyslexia, are addressed. Swallowing difficulties, known as dysphagia, which can be caused by neurological diseases, structural abnormalities, or age-related changes, are another significant area of focus.

Phoniatricians work collaboratively with other medical professionals, including otolaryngologists (ENT specialists), neurologists, pediatricians, dentists, and speech-language pathologists. Diagnostic tools may include laryngoscopy, stroboscopy, acoustic analysis of the voice, aerodynamic measurements, and videostroboscopy to visualize vocal fold function. Treatment approaches can involve voice therapy, speech therapy, medication, and in some cases, surgical interventions. The goal is to improve communication abilities and the quality of life for individuals affected by these disorders.
