Folyadékgyűjtésben is a Hungarian term that translates to "fluid collection" in English. It refers to the accumulation of abnormal amounts of fluid in a body cavity or tissue. This can occur in various locations within the body and is often a symptom of an underlying medical condition.

Common areas where fluid collection can occur include the pleural space (pleural effusion), the abdominal cavity (ascites), the pericardial sac around the heart (pericardial effusion), and within tissues (edema). The nature of the fluid can vary, ranging from serous fluid to blood, pus, or chyle, depending on the cause.

The causes of fluid collection are diverse. Infections, inflammation, trauma, organ failure (such as heart failure or liver cirrhosis), and certain types of cancer can all lead to the abnormal accumulation of fluids. For example, heart failure can cause fluid to back up into the lungs, leading to pleural effusion, or into the abdominal cavity, causing ascites. Liver disease can impair protein production, leading to fluid leakage from blood vessels into the abdomen.

Diagnosis of fluid collection typically involves medical imaging techniques such as ultrasound, CT scans, or X-rays. A sample of the collected fluid may also be withdrawn (paracentesis or thoracentesis) and analyzed to determine its composition and identify the underlying cause. Treatment strategies depend on the location, volume, and cause of the fluid. This may include diuretics to help the body eliminate excess fluid, drainage procedures to remove the accumulated fluid, and specific treatments targeting the underlying medical condition.
