Fluvial describes processes, environments, and deposits associated with rivers and streams. The term encompasses erosion, transport, and deposition of sediment by running water, as well as the landscapes created by these processes, including channels, floodplains, and deltas.

Fluvial systems transport sediment in different modes depending on flow strength and sediment supply. Bedload moves along the bed by rolling and saltation, while suspended load consists of finer particles carried within the water column. Peak flows can scour channels and create new bedforms; lower flows allow deposition.

Channel morphologies vary under fluvial dynamics. Meandering rivers develop sinuous routes with point bars and cut banks; braided rivers carry high sediment loads and form multiple strands separated by channels with active bars; straight channels are uncommon in nature except in constrained settings. Floodplains form from repeated overbank deposition during floods; levees build up along river margins.

Fluvial sediments are studied in geology and geography to interpret past climates, landscapes, and hydrological regimes. They host important ecosystems and are harnessed for water resources, irrigation, and navigation, but are also subject to hazards such as flooding and bank erosion. In stratigraphy, fluvial deposits record changing base levels and discharge over time.
