Flottálás refers to a separation process used in various industries, particularly in mining and wastewater treatment. It relies on the principle of differential adhesion of solid particles to air bubbles. In essence, it's a technique to selectively separate suspended solids from a liquid.

The core mechanism involves introducing air bubbles into a mixture of liquid and solid particles. Certain particles are treated with chemicals, called collectors, which make them hydrophobic, meaning they repel water. These hydrophobic particles attach to the air bubbles. Frothers are also added to stabilize the bubbles, creating a froth layer on the surface. This froth, carrying the attached hydrophobic particles, can then be easily skimmed off, leaving the hydrophilic (water-attracting) particles behind in the liquid.

In mining, flottálás is extensively used for mineral processing, such as concentrating valuable ores like copper, lead, and zinc. Different minerals exhibit varying degrees of hydrophobicity, allowing for their separation. In wastewater treatment, it's employed to remove suspended solids, oils, and greases, improving water quality before discharge or further treatment. The efficiency of flottálás depends on factors like particle size, chemical reagent dosages, and aeration intensity.
