Flotaatiomenetelmällä, also known as flotation, is a mineral processing technique used to separate valuable minerals from gangue minerals based on differences in their specific gravities. The process involves the use of water and various chemicals to create a buoyant medium, typically a mixture of water and frothing agents, which allows the desired minerals to float to the surface while the gangue minerals sink to the bottom.

The flotation process begins with the crushing and grinding of the ore to a fine particle size, which increases the surface area available for chemical attachment. The ground ore is then mixed with water and flotation reagents, which include collectors, frothers, and depressants. Collectors are surface-active chemicals that adhere to the mineral surfaces, making them hydrophobic and allowing them to attach to air bubbles. Frothers are chemicals that stabilize the air bubbles, creating a froth that carries the valuable minerals to the surface. Depressants are chemicals that selectively prevent certain minerals from floating.

The mixture is then agitated in a flotation cell, where air is introduced to create bubbles. The bubbles rise through the mixture, carrying the valuable minerals to the surface, where they form a froth. The froth is then skimmed off and the remaining gangue minerals are discarded. The valuable minerals are then dried and further processed.

Flotation is widely used in the mining industry due to its efficiency and ability to handle a wide range of mineral types. It is particularly effective for the processing of sulfide minerals, such as copper, lead, and zinc, as well as non-sulfide minerals like gold and coal.
