Fjärrvattenystemet, or district heating system, is a method of distributing heat generated centrally to multiple buildings. This centralized heat source is often a combined heat and power (CHP) plant, industrial waste heat, or a dedicated boiler. The heat is transported through a network of insulated underground pipes carrying hot water or steam to residential and commercial buildings. Upon reaching the destination, a heat exchanger transfers the thermal energy from the district heating network to the building's internal heating system, which can then be used for space heating and domestic hot water.

District heating systems offer several advantages, including increased energy efficiency, reduced local emissions compared to individual heating systems, and the ability to utilize a wider range of heat sources, including renewable and waste heat.
