Finstøv, meaning "fine dust" in Norwegian, refers to very small particles of solid matter suspended in the air. These particles are typically less than 10 micrometers in diameter and can originate from a variety of sources. Natural sources include dust storms, volcanic eruptions, and sea spray. Human activities are also significant contributors, with industrial processes, vehicle exhaust, and agricultural practices releasing considerable amounts of finstøv into the atmosphere.

The composition of finstøv is diverse and depends on its origin. It can contain mineral particles, organic matter, soot, metals, and other chemical compounds. Due to their small size, these particles can remain airborne for extended periods and travel long distances. When inhaled, finstøv can penetrate deep into the respiratory system, potentially causing health problems. It is a component of particulate matter (PM), and studies have linked exposure to PM, particularly fine particles (PM2.5), to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Beyond its health impacts, finstøv can also affect visibility and contribute to air pollution.
