Finding aggregation is a term used in data analysis to describe the process of identifying and computing aggregated representations of data. It involves selecting the aggregation functions to apply and the levels at which data should be summarized, and it applies across statistics, databases, and data science.

Common aggregation functions include sum, mean, median, count, minimum, maximum, and measures such as standard deviation or growth rate. Aggregation is typically performed after grouping data by one or more keys, such as time periods, geographic regions, or categorical attributes, producing concise summaries of larger datasets.

In databases, aggregation is implemented through queries that use grouping (GROUP BY) and aggregation operators (SUM, AVG, etc.). In data warehousing, roll-up and cube operations enable multi-level aggregation across hierarchies. In time-series analysis, resampling or window-based aggregations produce summaries over regular intervals or moving windows.

Challenges include choosing appropriate granularity, handling missing values and outliers, and preserving important variability. Over-aggregation can obscure meaningful patterns, while under-aggregation can miss trends. Metadata and lineage help explain how aggregates were produced.

Applications span business intelligence, finance, sensor networks, epidemiology, and social science research, where summarized metrics support decision making and pattern discovery.
