The term appears to be a neologism formed from the Finnish word finaliteetti, itself derived from French finalité meaning finality; in English-language usage, it is occasionally adapted to reflect Finnish linguistic roots.

In philosophy and cognitive science, finaliteetti describes teleological or end-state-oriented descriptions of processes, such as plans, algorithms, or life courses, where the endpoint is defined in advance and guides intermediate steps.
