Filterpaber, or filter paper, is a cellulose-based sheet designed to separate solids from liquids by filtration. Made mainly from wood pulp, it features controlled porosity so that liquids pass through while solids are retained. It is widely used in laboratories and also in culinary contexts such as coffee and tea preparation.

Filter papers come in grades and formats tailored to different filtration needs. Qualitative papers provide general-purpose retention, while quantitative papers are designed for gravimetric analysis and typically have very low inorganic ash content. Pore size and flow rate vary by grade, from fine to coarse, affecting filtration speed and clarity. Papers can be natural/unbleached or bleached, and some are treated to improve wet strength or chemical resistance. Hydrophobic variants exist for specific liquids.

Applications include analytical chemistry for separating reaction mixtures, environmental testing for sample pretreatment, and routine tasks in education. In addition to lab use, consumer products such as coffee filters and tea bags rely on similar filter papers manufactured to food-grade standards.

Handling and disposal: For best performance, pre-wet the paper before use and place it on a suitable funnel or support. After use, disposal depends on residues: non-hazardous samples may be discarded with ordinary waste, while papers contaminated with hazardous chemicals require appropriate waste handling according to local regulations. Filter papers should be stored dry in a sealed container to prevent moisture uptake.
