Fill light is a lighting technique used in photography and videography to reduce the contrast of a scene and increase detail in shadows. It is typically achieved by introducing a secondary light source that is less intense than the main light, or "key light." The purpose of fill light is to soften harsh shadows and make the overall image more evenly exposed.

In practice, fill light can be created using a dedicated light, such as a softbox or a reflector. A reflector, often a white or metallic surface, bounces light from the key light back into the shadowed areas. The intensity of the fill light can be controlled by the distance of the fill source from the subject, the power of the light source, or the angle of the reflector.

The amount of fill light used is a creative choice. Too little fill light will result in deep shadows and a high-contrast image, while too much fill light can flatten the image and reduce the sense of three-dimensionality. The goal is often to achieve a balance that reveals detail without eliminating the natural modeling and depth that shadows provide.
