Fibrocytars are cells found in connective tissue. They are characterized by their elongated, spindle-like shape and a nucleus that is typically flattened. Fibrocytars are considered to be quiescent, or less active, versions of fibroblasts. Fibroblasts are actively involved in the synthesis of collagen and other extracellular matrix components, playing a crucial role in wound healing and tissue repair. When their synthetic activity decreases, fibroblasts can transform into fibrocytars.

The function of fibrocytars is not as well-defined as that of fibroblasts. However, they are believed to contribute to the maintenance of the connective tissue structure. They may play a role in regulating the turnover of extracellular matrix components and in responding to signals that trigger a return to a more active fibroblast state. The transition between fibroblast and fibrocytar is thought to be reversible, meaning fibrocytars can differentiate back into fibroblasts when needed, such as during significant tissue damage. The exact mechanisms and stimuli that regulate this interconversion are areas of ongoing research.
