Fibriiniverkosto, also known as a fibrin clot, is a crucial component of hemostasis, the process that stops bleeding. It is formed when soluble fibrinogen protein in the blood is converted into insoluble fibrin strands. This conversion is primarily mediated by the enzyme thrombin, which is activated as part of the coagulation cascade.

The fibrinogen-to-fibrin conversion involves the enzymatic cleavage of small peptides from fibrinogen, allowing the fibrin monomers to spontaneously polymerize. These monomers then assemble into long, insoluble fibers that form a mesh-like structure. This fibrin mesh traps blood cells, including red blood cells and platelets, and other plasma proteins, effectively creating a plug that seals damaged blood vessels.

The formation of the fibrin clot is a dynamic process. Initially, the clot is soft and gel-like. Over time, it undergoes a process called clot retraction, where platelets within the clot contract, squeezing out serum and consolidating the mesh. This makes the clot stronger and more stable, helping to prevent further blood loss. The fibrin network also provides a scaffold for tissue repair and regeneration. Eventually, the clot is broken down by a process called fibrinolysis, which is carried out by the enzyme plasmin.
