Fibriinimolekyyleiksi, also known as fibrinogen, is a soluble protein found in blood plasma. It plays a crucial role in the process of blood clotting, also known as hemostasis. Fibrinogen is synthesized in the liver and circulates in the bloodstream in an inactive form.

When a blood vessel is injured, a cascade of enzymatic reactions is triggered, leading to the activation of thrombin. Thrombin then acts upon fibrinogen molecules, cleaving off small peptides called fibrinopeptides A and B. This transformation converts soluble fibrinogen into insoluble fibrin monomers.

These fibrin monomers then spontaneously polymerize, forming a mesh-like network of fibrin strands. This fibrin network traps blood cells and platelets, forming a stable blood clot. This clot effectively seals the injured blood vessel, preventing further blood loss and initiating the wound healing process.

The process of converting fibrinogen to fibrin is a fundamental step in hemostasis. Defects in fibrinogen production or function can lead to bleeding disorders. Conversely, certain medical conditions can cause excessive fibrin formation, leading to dangerous blood clots. The measurement of fibrinogen levels in blood plasma is a common diagnostic test used to assess clotting ability and monitor various medical conditions.
